From San Diego we follow Interstate 8 into Arizona until we hit Casa Grande at Interstate 10 and continue to our first stop in Arizona; Tucson.
March 21 – 24. We spent four nights in Tucson. We stayed at the Rincon Country West RV Resort. This is a big complex where the seniors stay long-term during the winter when their homes are under several feet of snow. It is 55+ only complex. You would expect it to be quieter since there are no children. But noooo. Seniors like to party and since most of them have hearing aids, they talk loudly. I should shut-up as I am one of them. Anyway this is a very nice place. Everyone is very friendly.
4th AVENUE STREET FAIR
This was a nice surprise. This event is held twice a year; in the spring and in the fall. We happened to arrive on the weekend that it was taking place. So the day after we arrived in Tuscon, on Sunday, we spent the day shopping on 4th Avenue. 4th Avenue is a very long street so the row of vendors was endless. There was a lot of unique crafts that were new to us and we also saw a few familiar vendors that we have seen at the Harvest Fairs in the Bay Area.
We saw this kind of thing in Europe, especially Paris. They call them 'love locks'. You write messages of love on the lock and then attach them to fences, bridges, etc.
ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM
You cannot visit Tucson and not visit this Museum, Zoo and Garden. Two miles of paths lead visitors through landscapes containing over 1,300 species of plants that are native to the Sonoran Desert and more than 300 animals that are also native to this region. You also get a fantastic view of the vast desert dotted with leggy Saguaro cactus. There is an excellent restaurant with sit down dining and a café with a vast choice of meals. It was a very hot day so we brought plenty of
water and walked slowly. We had a
relaxing and wonderful time.
Mexican Wolf (Lobo). There are fewer than 50 of these that remain in the wild today. This museum is working at keeping them from extinction.
This must be nesting season. There were a lot of nesting hummingbirds in this walk thru cage. I even saw one hummingbird in the bushes gathering spider webs then fly to it's nest to add the webs to it.
An art gallery where visiting artists display their works is also there for you to enjoy.
This guy stared right back at you and then followed you with his eyes.
This Steller Jay watched me eating this candy stick, then jumped onto a branch near me and reached out to take a taste too.
This coyote suddenly stood up and started barking, then howling. Another coyote closer to where I was standing held his head up and started howling right back. I set my camera to video and thought I had recorded it all. But #@!!. In the excitement I pushed the wrong button. In my 64 years I have never witnessed something like this. When am I ever going to get a 2nd chance? Maybe it was just as well. Some jerk next to me started howling too and kept at it until I turned and said "do you mind". He stopped, but would have ruined the recording if I had done it right. When we walked away, the jerk started howling again. jeeze
Ohh this Cactus Wren's singing sure brought back memories of our living in Phoenix 10+ years ago. We had them in our back yard and they would sing all day.
It's not real. It's made of iron.
Next stop, Huachuca City.
